Here is an interesting article about how Van Gogh dealt with the very same issue.

I'm surprised that these paintings have held up as well as they have... (here's one of them)

the sketch technique of this drawing is very unique. I love the warm colors contrasting off of the cool colors in the foreground. the perception of this painting is very realistic... even though in all actuality it is somewhat realistically unporportioned.
Ha! I remember being desperate for supplies while a student in college and painting on a cabinet door. It took incredible commitment for Van Gogh to paint during desperate times... but he had to. He was driven!
Out of all of the Van Gogh paintings i have seen, this is one of my favorites. To me it seems that some of the other paintings do not really tell a story, and this one does. A story of a small village and its humble residents. A story of the town's beauty, because in this painting i see different seasons which are beautiful. I like this painting not only for its story, but for the vast array of colors intertwined together in a way that is unique and harmonious. this is definitely, in my opinion one of the best pieces.
wow! that is true, i definately give Van Gogh two thumbs up for still following his passion for art during the desperate times. I too even now am having a hard time keeping up with supplies since my parents want me to pay for it. it's difficult to pick good quality art supplies at a reasonable price, since your art depends a lot on the quality of materials.
